Venezuela won’t repeat as Caribbean Series champs after extra-inning semifinal loss, plays Puerto Rico for 3rd place.

Venezuela (2-3) rallied to force extra innings in its semifinal on Wednesday before losing in 11 innings to fall to the third-place game, set for Thursday night at Estadio Nido de los Águilas in Mexicali, Mexico. Their opponent will be Puerto Rico (2-3), which was again shut down by Mexican pitcher David Reyes in its semifinal loss. Venezuelan club Tiburones de La Guaira won last year’s Caribbean Series in Miami, but 2024-25 Venezuelan League champion Cardenales de Lara wasn’t able to repeat. Puerto Rican league champion Indios de Mayagüez was seeking its first Caribbean Series title since 1992.

Venezuela scored twice in the eighth to tie its semifinal with Dominican Republic, getting an RBI single from Rangel Ravelo and a sacrifice fly from Jose Rondón to knot the game at 3-3. Ravelo came through again in the 10th with an RBI knock after Puerto Rico scored in the top half. The potential tying run was stranded on third in the 11th. Ravelo had three of the team’s 10 hits.

Ronnie Williams gave up three runs in the first inning, enough for Mexico to fend off Puerto Rico 3-1 on Wednesday night. Puerto Rico only mustered five hits, two from Isan Díaz, who drove in the team’s lone run with a seventh-inning single that chased home Eddie Rosario, who had driven a two-out triple to center.

The teams met on Monday in the preliminary stage of the tournament, with Venezuela rallying from an early four-run deficit for a 10-5 victory, with Ravelo going 3-for-4 with two RBI and Danry Vásquez homering. Danny Ortiz hit a three-run homer for Puerto Rico in the loss.
