This is arguably the best weekend of the season for football. After two days of Wild Card matchups in the NFL, the best was saved for last as the Ohio State Buckeyes will face off against the Alabama Crimson Tide in the College Football National Championship game. In a season that was characterized by unpredictability due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it's ironic that the Tide are predictably the best team in the land once again and headed to the naty.

What wasn't predictable about this game is Ohio State's drubbing of Clemson in the Sugar Bowl semifinal. A squad led by Trevor Lawrence, who will easily be the first pick in the 2021 draft, isn't supposed to lose to a team that struggled in their conference championship game and only played five games in the regular season. If there was one thing we could count on this year is little happened like it was supposed to. What we do know about this one, it should be a explosive high octane matchup. The over/under is 75.5 points.

If Alabama wins this game, Nick Saban will most likely be crowned the greatest college football coach of all time. He is looking for his sixth title with the Tide and seventh title overall. Saban is trying to top another Alabama great, Bear Bryant who won all of the national championship games his teams appeared in. He is tied with Saban with the most national championships of all time with six.

It's not the same game but Saban would pass Bill Belichick Super Bowl wins as a head coach. Both are the greatest in their respective sport and Saban's teams are showing no sign of slowing down. Can't say as much for the Patriots right now.

It is difficult to say which Saban championship contending team is the best but the 2020 version can hang with the best of them. They had two Heisman candidates in QB Mac Jones and WR DeVonta Smith, the later of which won the award. Smith is only the third wide receiver in history to take home the award after Tim Brown and Desmond Howard. In a shortened season he went for more than 1,600 yards with 20 touchdowns. In the Rose Bowl against Notre Dame alone he went for 130 yards and three touchdowns.

As if a once in a generation talent like Smith wasn't enough, the Tide also have Jaylen Waddle. He broke his ankle on October 24 but he has a chance to return for this one. In five games before his injury, he was averaging 22.3 yards per reception. He is a first round prospect in his own right. Mac Jones has so many elite options and we haven't even mentioned the run game yet led by Najee Harris. He rushed for nearly 1,400 yards and scored an astounding 24 times. We'll say it again, Harris will be a first round pick along with his QB Jones. No wonder this team is averaging 535 yards per game.

Certainly Ohio State's defense will have its hands full but they were able to limit the best QB in the country in their game against Clemson and they'll have their own counterpunch in Fields. He did not turn any heads in the Big 10 Championship game against Northwestern as the Buckeyes only scored six points in the first half. They pulled away in the second but it seemed like a foregone conclusion they were going to get smoked in the CFB semifinal. It didn't help that it was reported Fields sustained a thumb injury against the Wildcats. Heck, Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said they shouldn't even be ranked in the top ten. Karma is brutal sometimes.

Fields more than shut up the doubters by throwing for six touchdowns and 385 yards against the Tigers. After the Northwestern game, Fields dropped from the number two quarterback prospect in mock drafts but resolidified his spot after the semi. There will be some more injury questions for Fields headed into this one after he was targeted by a Clemson linebacker and he sustained an injury to his lower core. Fields said he was ready to go for this Monday night college football matchup. Ohio State was more than a touchdown underdog against Clemson. Reservations and doubts are the fuel to Fields' fire.

These blue chip programs are going to make our jaws drop more than the New Year's Ball. With a new year this is the biggest game to start 2021 and when we look back, hopefully it's the one that started getting us back to normal. Whatever that word means in 2021. What more could you want in a National Championship game?
