The might of Barcelona and Bayern Munich will collide at the Estadio da Luz on Friday in what many will consider the most hotly contested of this season’s UEFA Champions League quarter-finals.
Barcelona will contest a Champions League quarter-final for the 13th season running but find themselves in the unfamiliar position of being underdogs in Lisbon, Portugal, where they’ll attempt to stop a Bayern team that’s won its past 18 games in all competitions.
Neither European giant has featured in any of the past four Champions League finals, and only one can move into this term’s last four. Europe’s top-tier tournament represents Barcelona’s last chance to end this campaign with silverware, while Bayern have a chance at completing a treble:

The two teams—each of whom have won five Champions League titles—were recently in action after playing out the second legs of their respective last-16 matchups. Quique Setien’s side put three past Napoli on Saturday to seal a 4-2 aggregate win, the same evening Bayern battered Chelsea 4-1 to round off their 7-1 rout over two legs.

Bayern Munich as the favorite
It’s little wonder Hansi Flick’s Bayern have taken up roost as favorites for this clash having won three of the past four meetings between these teams. In fact, Die Roten have won six of their 10 competitive encounters with Barca, who have only two victories over Bayern to date.
The most recent history is also relevant, however. It was during the 2014-15 Champions League semi-finals that Lionel Messi and Neymar teamed up across two legs to beat the Bavarians 5-3 (and later pipped Juventus to that season’s crown).
In the first-leg 3-0 victory at the Camp Nou, Messi inflicted one of the most memorable pieces of skill in modern soccer upon defender Jerome Boateng:

Boateng & Co. will hope to not give Messi the same freedom to devastate this time around, and there’s a feeling the Argentinian will shoulder much of Barca’s burden in finding the back of the net.
This year’s battle will be decided over one match at a neutral venue, where Sergio Busquets and Arturo Vidal will buoy Setien’s midfield options after each serving suspensions. Samuel Umtiti and Ousmane Dembele are each lacking fitness and won’t feature for the Blaugrana, while French compatriot Kingsley Coman is hoping to be back among Bayern’s options following injury.
Robert Lewandowski has scored 12 goals in his last eight club appearances and is hoping to expose a Barcelona back line that’s cracked against other higher-class opposition this term.
This Bayern team has regained confidence under Flick and looks like it could have the potential for several Champions League challenges in the years to come, while Barcelona seek to prove they’re not to be discounted.
