How to Watch Cleveland Browns at Kansas City Chiefs
The Kansas City Chiefs will play their first playoff game since winning Super Bowl LIV. Do the Cleveland Browns have any shot at pulling off another upset? TANNEN MAURY/EPA

Patrick Mahomes and Baker Mayfield had a lot in common before they ever made it to the league. They both were starting quarterbacks at Texas Tech under now Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury. That first year with Mayfield was the best record Kingsbury in college going 8-5 and a win in the Holiday Bowl in 2013. That happened to be Kingsbury first year as well. Baker Mayfield moved on to Oklahoma and gave way to Patrick Mahomes starting for the Red Raiders.

Mayfield went on to have great personal success winning the Heisman Trophy and playing on the better team that eventually made the CFP Semifinal. Mahomes on the other hand would have the better statistical seasons all cultimating in 2016 when he led the country in yards per game, passing yards, total touchdowns, total offense and points responsible for. Somehow that team still only finished 5-7. If that Texas Tech team had any semblance of defense, went undefeated and made a New Year's Day Bowl, Cleveland had the first pick in the 2017 draft and probably easily would have picked Mahomes. Funny how fate works.

This Mahomes-Mayfield rivalry first culminated in a 66-59 Sooners shootout win over the Red Raiders. Some witnesses say that both teams only brought their offenses to the game and left their defenses at home. That score won't happen when the Browns visit the Chiefs as both of these teams defenses are no longer a liability. In 2018, Kansas City missed the Super Bowl because of the Patriots making an onslaught on their own turf only to score 13 in a Super Bowl LIII win against the Rams. Last year the Chiefs were able to slow down the 49ers enough to make a comeback and win it all last season.

As for the Browns recently, they've arguably drafted best when it comes to defensive players. Myles Garrett is a sensation whom the Browns actually took number one overall in 2017 and in 2018 they picked their Pro Bowl corner Denzel Ward soon after Mayfield who is electric when he can stay healthy. This defense doesn't have to do the impossible and shutout Mahomes and the Chiefs. Just enough to slow them down and let Mayfield keep up.

The only way that is going to happen in this game is if the Browns run the ball and eat up a ton of clock. The Chiefs offense is infinitely better than really anyone else's not just the Browns. But what Cleveland does better is run the football with their two headed monster in Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt. Combined they nearly have 2,000 yards and if the Chiefs can't stop the run, then Mayfield has to make it a priority to manage the game and not turn over the ball. If he tries to win the game himself, they will have no chance at the upset.

This upset seems more than unlikely but crazier things have happened in these playoffs alone. The Bills and Browns won a playoff game in the same weekend. If that's not a sign that anything is possible, then who knows what is. The Browns went up 28-0 in the first quarter against a better Steelers team after they hadn't won in Pittsburgh in 17 games. That's the third-longest losing streak to any opponent to any single opponent in league history. To top it all off that was their first playoff win since 1994. The Browns have a long way to go to match the level of the Chiefs but so does everyone in the NFL. They're riding a high and no town deserves these wins more than Cleveland. Crazier things have happened and that's why we tune into the NFL Playoffs.
