Winthrop and Radford open the Big South Baseball Tournament on Wednesday.

The chase for the Big South Conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA baseball tournament begins on Wednesday, with the first game of the tournament pitting No. 5 seed Winthrop (29-27) and fourth-seed Radford (27-26). The Big South uses a double-elimination format for its tournament, with the winner of this game advancing to face top-seeded USC Upstate on Thursday morning and the loser taking on the loser from Game 2 between Presbyterian and Charleston Southern later on Wednesday in an elimination game. Both the Eagles and Highlanders finished 13-11 in conference play, with Radford earning the seeding advantage after sweeping Winthrop in three games on May 9-11.

Winthrop hasn’t played in the NCAA tournament since 2006 and comes into the conference tournament off scoring 41 runs while taking two of three from High Point last weekend. Josh Skowronski enters the tournament slashing .313/.442/.625 with 13 home runs and 48 RBIs, while Jaylen Hernandez leads the team with 53 RBIs and Ethan Wilson has 12 stolen bases in 15 attempts.

The Highlanders last reached the NCAA tournament in 2017 and took a three-game sweep at Longwood last weekend to close out the regular season. James Ward slashes /347/.441/.609 with 11 home runs and 55 RBIs — both team highs — while Eli Hudgins has swiped 18 bases in 20 attempts.

Radford opened its series at Longwood, with sophomore left-hander Breckin Nace (2-2) on the mound. In 11 games, seven of them starts, Nace has a 4.95 ERA and 1.35 WHIP in 40 innings of work. Freshman right-hander Mason Tompkins (2-2) opened the series for the Eagles last weekend and comes into the tournament with a 6.31 ERA and 1.52 WHIP in 41.1 innings over 16 appearances and seven starts.
