No. 3 seed Cal State Fullerton (29-26) and fourth-seeded Hawaii (34-20) fell into the loser’s bracket at the Big West Conference tournament with losses on Thursday and will meet in an elimination game at Goodwin Field in Fullerton, California, on Friday night. The Big West is holding a conference tournament for the first time since 1998, with the top five finishers in the league standings qualifying. The Rainbow Warriors are after their first NCAA tournament big since 2010 while the Titans missed the 2024 event after qualifying in 2023. Friday night’s winner advances to Saturday, where it faces the loser of Friday’s Cal Poly-UC Irvine winner’s bracket game.

Cal State Fullerton fell 7-2 to Cal Poly on Thursday, getting its only runs on back-to-back home runs from Matthew Bardowell and Andrew Kirchner in the eighth inning. Maddox Latta slashes .359/.483/.503 with three homers, 27 RBI and 14 steals. Kirchner tops the club with 12 homers and 70 RBI.

Hawaii surrendered six runs in the first two innings and its comeback bid fell short in a 7-5 loss to UC Irvine on Thursday. Ben Zeigler-Namoa belted a three-run home run in the seventh to cut the deficit to one, but Hawaii got no closer. Zeigler-Namoa slashes .333/.410/.512 with seven home runs and a team-high 52 RBI, with Kamana Nahaku leading the squad with nine homers. Matthew Miura has 18 stolen bases in 24 attempts.

Left-hander Jayden Harper (3-0) is scheduled to get the ball for the Titans on Friday. He has a 2.77 ERA and 1.12 WHIP in 26 innings over 14 appearances, with four starts. Hawaii did not announce a starter for Friday’s game.
