LSU eyes its 2nd national championship in 3 years as it looks to finish off Coastal Carolina on Sunday afternoon at the College World Series

LSU (52-15) broke the 26-game winning streak of Coastal Carolina (56-12) on Saturday night. On Sunday, the Tigers can lock up their second national championship in three years when they take on the Chanticleers in Game 2 of the College World Series Finals at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Nebraska. Coastal Carolina needs a win to force a decisive Game 3 on Monday. LSU has won seven national titles, most recently in 2023, while the Chanticleers won their lone championship back in 2016.

The Tigers scratched across a run in the bottom of the first on a walk, a groundout and Steven Milan’s RBI single up the middle and that was all left-hander Kade Anderson needed in a 1-0 victory in Game 1. Anderson allowed just three hits and struck out 10, throwing 130 pitches en route to the shutout.

Cameron Flukey allowed only four hits in six innings while striking out nine, but took the hard-luck loss for Coastal Carolina. The Chants had their chances, leaving eight men on base as Anderson walked five hitters and hit two others. Their best chance might have been in the third inning when they had runners at first and second with no one out before a failed sacrifice bunt, a strikeout and a caught stealing at third base ended the threat.

Coastal Carolina likely will go with 6-foot-8 right-hander Jacob Morrison (12-0) on Sunday. The redshirt sophomore has a 2.08 ERA and 0.91 WHIP in 18 appearances and 104 innings. LSU has junior right-hander Anthony Eyanson (11-2) lined up for Sunday. He has a 2.92 ERA and 1.15 WHIP in 19 games, striking out 143 in 101.2 innings.
