Undefeated Louisville and Vanderbilt will try to avoid their first loss in regional play on Saturday when they met in Nashville.

The unranked Louisville Cardinals will take on the top-ranked Vanderbilt Commodores on Saturday night in regional play at Charles Hawkins Field. The Cardinals opened regional play against East Tennessee State on Friday afternoon, winning 8-3 against the Buccaneers. The Cards were forced to play from behind after the Bucs picked up the first two runs with a homer in the third. Louisville went on to score the next eight runs before ETSU could put anymore on the board. Lucas Moore, Matt Klein and Eddie King Jr. each finished the game with two RBI, each hitting homers in the win. Patrick Forbes got the start on the mound, and ultimately the win, after striking out 13 batters in six innings of work.

The top-ranked Commodores had a more difficult time in their regional opener, narrowly getting past Wright State in a 4-3 victory. The Raiders scored three runs through the first four innings to take a 3-0 lead over Vanderbilt. The Commodores finally got on the board in the seventh with a Brodie Johnston solo shot to left field, but the team still trailed by two. In the bottom of the eighth, the Mike Mancini stepped up to the plate and brought his team within one, smashing a solo shot over the wall in center field. Riley Nelson followed suit just a few batters later with a two-run homer down the left field line to bring home what would be the winning run. JD Thompson earned the win on the mound, striking out 12 batters in eight innings before Sawyer Hawks came in to earn the save, striking out each of the three batters he faced.

Louisville and Vanderbilt have met a total of 34 times in their history and the Commodores hold a 21-13 lead in the all-time series. The teams’ last meeting took place earlier this season and the Cardinals battled to a 5-4 win against then-No. 10 Vanderbilt at home.
