No. 18 Mississippi State (6-2) looks to bounce back from a loss on Tuesday when it takes on Rice (2-5) in the first game of the Astros Foundation College Classic on Friday morning at Daiken Park in Houston. The Owls also come off a loss on their home field, dropping a decision on Wednesday. The Astros Foundation College Classic is in its 25th year and features defending national champion Tennessee and runner-up Texas A&M, along with Arizona and Oklahoma State in a three-day, nine-game event.

The Bulldogs dropped a 6-5 decision to visiting No. 21 Troy on Tuesday after clawing back from a 5-0 deficit to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth. The big blow was a fifth-inning grand slam from Noah Sullivan before Ace Reese drove in the tying run with a sixth-inning single. Sullivan is off to a 10-for-25 start at the plate with a homer and a team-high 11 RBIs, while four players — Reed Stallman, Aaron Downs, Reese and Hunter Hines — have two home runs each.

Visiting Arizona struck for five runs in the top of the seventh and held off the Owls for an 11-8 victory on Wednesday. Barrett Eldridge tied the game for Rice with a three-run home run in the fourth and Treyton Rank’s two-run base hit in the sixth gave the Owls a 7-5 lead. Trey Duffield is 6-for-18 to open the year, Rank leads the team with six RBIs and five players have one homer apiece.

Pico Kohn has made two starts for Mississippi State and is 1-0 with a 0.79 ERA and 0.44 WHIP and 22 strikeouts over 11.1 innings thus far. Tucker Alch is 1-0 in three relief appearances for Rice, posting a 1.42 ERA and 0.87 WHIP in 12.2 innings while Davion Hickson has 15 strikeouts in nine innings of work.
