No one homered for Kentucky in the win, but designated hitter Kyuss Gargett had the only RBI on his lone hit at the plate on Friday night. The other two runs were scored by Patrick Herrera and Gargett on a throwing error by West Virginia. The team was up 3-0 heading into the fifth inning and allowed four runs over the final four frames to lose.

The Spartans closed out their regular season with a 36-24 record overall and a 19-5 record against teams in the Big South. Winning that conference tournament is what earned the regional’s No. 4 seed a trip to the NCAA Tournament. They took on the regional host, Clemson, the national No. 14 seed, in the first game and lost 7-3 on Friday.

Amp Phillips started the game on the mound and gave up three earned runs over 6.0 innings with nine strikeouts. Cooper Ellingworth finished the final 2.0 innings and was credited with the loss. Johnny Sweeney and Scott Newman homered in the win, each a solo shot. Newman was the only player with multiple hits in the game as well.
