Defending national champion Tennessee looks to remain unbeaten when it takes on Rice at Houston’s Daikin Park

No. 3 Tennessee (9-0), the defending national champions, open the second day of play at the Astros Foundation College Classic on Saturday morning when it takes on Rice (2-6) at Daikin Park in Houston. The Volinteeers have played in the last two College World Series and captured their first national title last season. The Owls last played in the NCAA Tournament in 2017 and have played in six College World Series, winning the national title in 2003. This is the 25th year for the Astros Foundation College Classic, with Arizona, Mississippi State, Oklahoma State and Texas A&M also participating.

Gavin Kilen homered in each of his first two at-bats while Manny Marin and Dean Curley also went deep in Tennessee’s 5-2 victory over Oklahoma State on Friday. Liam Doyle struck out nine in 4.1 innings of shutout baseball to start the game. Levi Clark is 10-for-19 with a team-high 13 RBI, while Kilen took over the team lead with five home runs.

Hiram Bocachica Jr. was 2-for-3 with a homer and drove in two runs in Rice’s 14-3 loss to No. 18 Mississippi State in the event opener on Friday. Bocachica is 7-for-21 so far and is one of six players on the club with a home run this season. Treyton Rank leads the team with six RBI.

Left-hander Blaine Brown is scheduled to start for the Owls on Saturday. He has a 3.37 ERA and 2.25 WHIP in 2.2 innings with four strikeouts and has started once to go with a pair of relief appearances. The Vols are set to start right-hander Marcus Phillips, who has a 1.04 ERA and 0.81 WHIP in his first two starts, striking out 12 in 8.2 innings.
