No. 16 UNC draws even with Wake Forest in the ACC standings, can clinch series on Saturday afternoon

No. 16 North Carolina (26-8) won its third straight game on Friday night and can clinch an Atlantic Coast Conference series victory on Saturday when it hosts Wake Forest (24-11) at Boshamer Stadium in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The Tar Heels and Demon Deacons enter Saturday with a share of seventh place in the ACC at 9-7 along with Duke. UNC comes off a College World Series appearance in 2024 and has played in the last seven NCAA tournaments. Wake Forest has three straight NCAA tourney trips and played in the 2023 CWS.

North Carolina turned Friday’s game into a rout with four runs in both the second and fourth innings and closed out an 11-1 run-rule victory on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh. Jake Knapp improved to 7-0, allowing a run on four hits in 5.2 innings while Gavin Gallaher was 3-for-3 with three RBI, including a two-run home run in the fourth. Hunter Stokely slashes .338/.401/.609 with 10 homers and 40 RBI while Luke Stevenson has also slugged 10 dingers.

The Deacons got their only run on a sixth-inning sacrifice fly by Luke Costello while Jack Winnay had two of the team’s five hits on Friday night. Kade Lewis comes in with a .445/.555/.782 slash line to go with 10 home runs and 45 RBI. Marek Houston also has 10 homers and 45 RBI while Winney has gone deep 10 times as well.

Right-hander Jason DeCaro (4-3) takes the ball on Saturday for UNC, coming in with a 4.69 ERA and 1.21 WHIP in eight starts and 40.1 innings of work. Wake Forest goes with right-hander Logan Lunceford (5-2), who has a 3.72 ERA and 1.01 WHIP in nine appearances and eight starts, striking out 67 in 38.2 innings.
