Top-seeded Mercer takes on The Citadel on Thursday for a spot in the SoCon tournament semifinals.

The No. 1 seed Mercer Bears (43-13) get their first action at the Southern Conference tournament on Thursday morning when they face The Citadel Bulldogs, the tournament’s fifth seed, at Fluor Field in Greenville, South Carolina. The Bears finished 15-6 in SoCon play, finishing one game better than Western Carolina, while The Citadel went 11-10 and won twice on Wednesday to advance to face Mercer. The Bears won the conference title for the first time since 2017 and looks for its first NCAA tournament bid since 2019. The Bulldogs haven’t played in the NCAA tournament since 2010.

The Citadel erupted for six runs in the top of the first inning on Wednesday afternoon, survived giving up five in the bottom of the frame, and pulled away from No. 4 seed Wofford for a 13-7 victory. Michael Gibson singled home the first run for the Bulldogs before Wofford committed an error and a failed fielder’s choice on back-to-back bunts. Sam Dansky followed with a two-run double. Gibson and Christian Stratis each drove in three runs and Andrew Buffkin got through five innings, allowing six runs but only two earned, while striking out eight. The win over Wofford came after The Citadel eliminated VMI with a 21-11 win in the first game of the tournament.

Mercer enters the tournament with eight straight wins and took two of three from The Citadel when the teams met in March. The Bears boast three players with at least 20 home runs in Braydon Kersey (21), Chris Katz (20) and Eli Stephens (20), with Katz topping the club with 71 RBIs and a 1.245 OPS. Garrett Lambert was the team’s top starter this season, working to a 4.55 ERA and 1.22 WHIP in 14 starts while striking out 80 in 65.1 innings.

The winner of this game advances to Friday’s semifinal, while the loser takes on Wofford in an elimination game later on Thursday.
