In a tournament filled with surprises, Cal State San Marcos, seeded No. 8 among the quarterfinalists at the NCAA Division II Elite Eight, takes on No. 5 seed Minnesota State on Wednesday night

Cal State San Marcos (27-6) stunned top-seeded Gannon on Monday night in a quarterfinal matchup at the NCAA Division II Elite Eight in St. Joseph, Missouri. The Cougars advance to Wednesday’s semifinal against No. 5 seed Minnesota State (30-5), which topped Georgia Southwestern in a milder upset on Monday. The Mavericks are in their third straight NCAA tournament and their first Elite Eight since winning the national title in 2009. It is the first Elite Eight appearance for Cal State San Marcos, which is in its third consecutive Division II tournament. Minnesota State came out of the Central Region as the No. 7 seed, upsetting the second, third and first seeds to advance. The Cougars were seeded second in the West Region.

Cal State San Marcos tied its quarterfinal against Gannon with 1:24 left in regulation and went on to an 85-80 overtime victory on Monday. Jordan Vasquez finished with 26 points and 11 rebounds while Charity Gallegos and Ava Ranson dropped in 15 points apiece. Vasquez averages 16.7 points and 11.5 rebounds and Gallegos gets 15.8 points per game.

The Mavericks grabbed a two-point lead with just more than a minute left in its 93-88 victory over Georgia Southwestern on Monday. Joey Batt posted 21 points and six assists while Natalie Bremer notched 14 points and six steals. Batt averages 16.3 points, Destinee Bursch scores 16.0 points per game and Ava Stier grabs 5.4 rebounds a night.

This is the first-ever meeting between the Cougars and Minnesota State, with the winner advancing to face either No. 3 seed Ferris State or second-seeded Texas Woman’s in Friday’s championship game.
