In the second quarter, Lana Hamilton was able to put the ball to the left side of the cage to give Syracuse a 1-0 lead. The Tar Heels have been dominant this season on their way to what they hope is a national title and the same rang true on Tuesday when the team played Cal in the opening round of tournament play. UNC got off to a quick start with a goal from sophomore standout Charly Bruder in the first 57 seconds of the game to give the Tar Heels a 1-0 lead. Bruder struck again in the 20th minute and Sanne Hak extended the lead to three just before halftime. The Golden Bears were able to keep the Tar Heels from scoring in the third quarter, but two goals in the fourth from Avery Donahue and Hope Haynes put the game out of reach and allowed UNC to earn its 16th win over the season and tenth shutout of the year.
Syracuse and UNC met earlier this season to kick of ACC play and the Tar Heels won handily in a 5-0 victory at home to start its perfect ACC season. Five different UNC players found the back of the cage in that win.
