Top 5 Heisman Trophy Candidates After Week 6

With some huge upsets in Week 6 of college football, the top five Heisman Trophy leaders have been shaken up. Some have fallen, and some have risen. Regardless to say, these five players are the best leaders, passers, and game-changers in college football. They have led their teams to the Top-10 rankings in the nation and will only rise and get better as the season continues. Here are the top five candidates through six weeks for college football’s most coveted individual award.

5. Dillon Gabriel, QB, Oklahoma Sooners

The Sooners moved from the No. 12 team in the nation to the No. 5 team over the course of the weekend after taking down Quinn Ewers and No. 3 Texas on the road. In that game alone last week, Gabriel threw for 285 yards and a touchdown while rushing 14 times for 113 yards and another touchdown on the ground. In total this season, Gabriel has thrown for 1,878 yards and 16 touchdowns with two interceptions. He also adds 208 yards on the ground with five additional touchdowns. He will look towards a contest with his former college UCF next week.

4. Bo Nix, QB, Oregon Ducks

The Ducks are undefeated this season at 5-0 after taking a rest on a bye week this weekend. They are the No. 8 team in the country staying still heading into Week 7. Bo Nix’s biggest win this year was over the formerly ranked Colorado, winning 42-9. Nix had 276 yards and three touchdowns with one interception. Overall this season, Nix has thrown for 1,459 yards and 15 touchdowns with one interception. He has also run for 87 yards and an additional touchdown on the ground. Oregon will come out of their by with a massive Week 7 matchup against No. 7 Washington and Michael Penix, Jr.

3. Quinn Ewers, QB, Texas Longhorns

Quinn Ewers is the second-most NFL-ready quarterback in the nation, however, he is not second in line for the Heisman trophy — at least not currently. Ewers had a great game earlier this year taking down the former No. 3 team in the nation in Alabama. Ewers threw for 349 yards and three touchdowns in that upset win. However, Ewers and this Texas squad did just get upset by Dillon Gabriel and Oklahoma at home last weekend which is why he fell from my No. 2 to No. 3. Still this year, Ewers has 1,704 yards and 11 touchdowns with three interceptions (two against Oklahoma) on the season. He’s also added five touchdowns on the ground.

2. Michael Penix, Jr., QB, Washington Huskies

The Washington Huskies stayed ranked No. 7 at 5-0 this season after also enjoying a bye week in Week 6. Michael Penix Jr. might command the best complete offense in college football. He definitely has the best WR duo in the nation with Rome Odunze and Jalen McMillan. Because of the two of those, Penix has thrown for 1,999 yards and 16 touchdowns with two interceptions in one game less than the rest. He is averaging 399.8 yards per game. Penix will be back in action next week against his toughest competition of the year as they face off with Bo Nix and No. 8 Oregon.

1. Caleb Williams, QB, USC Trojans

Caleb Williams continues to be the best player in college football despite his team dropping from No. 9 to No. 10 after struggling in a three-overtime win against unranked Arizona at home last weekend. Wiliams only threw for 219 yards and one touchdown in that win. He also ran for 41 yards and three additional touchdowns. Williams has now totaled 1,822 yards threw the air and 124 yards on the ground. He has 28 total touchdowns with one interception. USC and Williams will be back in action next week against No. 21 Notre Dame.
