Top Five College Football Upset Chances During Rivalry Week

With just a few weeks left in the college football season, here are the top five upset chances between unranked and ranked teams this week.

Heading into rivalry week in college football, anything can happen. Rankings mean nothing and everything you have left from a tough season will be left out on the field this weekend. There are several teams that could be primed for a weekend of defeat against an in-state or in-conference rival that could doom their season. Here are the top five games this weekend that could have an unranked team prevailing over a ranked rival.

5. Washington State over No. 4 Washington

I wanted to put No. 3 Michigan over No. 2 Ohio State here, but that isn’t really an upset, so I will go with Washington State over No. 4 Washington. The Cougars upset Oregon State earlier this year and came close with Oregon. You can never doubt a team with a passion that plays in your state and that is what could happen if Michael Penix and Washington aren’t careful. They haven’t blown any teams out of the water and like to play it close to the vest.

4. Texas A&M over No. 14 LSU

Texas A&M will head into this game as the team’s last chance to impress teams before Bowl Season is announced. They have already lost to No. 8, No. 21 Tennessee, and No. 12 Ole Miss as three of their four losses this season. The once-ranked Aggies lost to Miami as their only unranked loss this season. On the other side, Jayden Daniels has a Heisman candidacy that is dependent on a strong performance in this game.

3. Auburn over No. 8 Alabama

This is a rivalry that dates back to before many of us were born. The late-game heroics that have gone on between these two teams over the years have been relentless. Though Alabama is ranked No. 8 in the nation and leads the all-time series 49-37-1 since 1893, Auburn has no concept of being an underdog. Payton Thorne hasn’t been electric this season with only 1,580 yards and 14 touchdowns with seven interceptions. What provides him the opportunity to be deadly is his dual-threat ability. He has 463 yards and three touchdowns on the ground this season. His way of extending plays could push this team over their rival.

2. Arizona State over No. 15 Arizona

The key to this game will be how much is Jaden Rashada involved in the offense. He has just 403 yards and three touchdowns with one interception this season on 60 attempts. He has been lightyears better than Trenton Bourguet, who has one touchdown and four interceptions on 248 attempts. They should already have the advantage of being at home, but Noah Fifita and Tetairoa McMillan have had a connection lately only seen with the best QB/WR duos in college football. If they can contain the 2,000-yard passer and 1,000-yard receivers, they have a chance at an in-state upset.

1. Florida over No. 5 Florida State

Florida has a great chance to make the most of this mediocre season that it has going coming into this game with a 5-6 record. The No. 5 team in the nation and college football playoff hopeful Florida State lost its stellar Heisman-candidate quarterback Jordan Travis to a season-ending injury last week. If Trevor Etienne can carve the FSU defense and UF can stop new Florida State starter Tate Rodemaker, it has a great chance at another in-state upset. The Gators would have an even better chance if their own starting quarterback, Graham Mertz, didn’t get injured last week, too.

Regional restrictions may apply.
