The regular season will come to a close for Illinois and Ohio State on Tuesday afternoon as the teams meet in Columbus ahead of the Big Ten Championships.
The No. 7 Illinois Fighting Illini will head to Columbus on Tuesday to take on the No. 6 Ohio State Buckeyes at the Covelli Center, as the teams close out men’s gymnastics regular season competition with their final Big Ten dual meet. The Buckeyes are currently in fourth place in the Big Ten standings with a conference record of 1-2 and an overall record of 4-3 on the season. The team’s most recent meet took place last Saturday against the No. 7 Michigan Wolverines and resulted in a big 328.100-322.000 defeat. Despite several podium finishes for Ohio State, the team still came up short. Jesse Pakele earned the floor title with a 13.550 and Conlan Simkins took a share of the pommel horse title with a 13.300. The Buckeyes delivered season-highs on pommel (55.400) and rings (54.650).

The Fighting Illini are just ahead of Ohio State in the standings, also with a conference record of 1-2 and an overall record of 4-3. Illinois most recently took on Big Ten-leading Penn State, falling 321.750-312.550 before being off from competition for the next two weeks. The Illini earned titles on two events, but Penn State had more depth and pulled off the upset. Connor Micklos took the top spot on the pommel horse (13.300), while Matthew Vu Nguyen, Garrett Schooley and Amari Sewell each scored a 14.250 on the vault to share the win. Vu Nguyen’s score was a career-high on vault, while Dylan Shepard earned a career-high 13.650 on the Parallel Bars.
Illinois and Ohio State have met a total of 18 times in their history and the Fighting Illini hold a commanding 16-9-1 lead in the all-time series. When the teams met in Big Ten competition last year, the Illini earned a 413.200-406.350 win.
