Big Ten rivals Michigan and Ohio State will meet on Sunday in the finals of the conference championship.

On Sunday afternoon, seventh-seeded Michigan will look to upset top-seeded Ohio State in the Big Ten tournament final at SeatGeek Stadium in Illinois. The Wolverines were an unlikely team to see in the championship game, but they made it past second-seeded Indiana and sixth-seeded UCLA to play for a title and an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.

Last weekend, the team took on newcomer UCLA in the semifinal round and emerged victorious in penalties. The teams played to a 1-1 draw in regulation and when the game was still tied up after overtime, penalties were needed to decide the winner. Uriel Zeitz scored his first goal of the season in the 21st minute to give Michigan a 1-0 lead, but UCLA converted a penalty kick in the 53rd minute to tie things up. Ethan Wood was dominant in net, saving three shots during regulation and two shots during penalties to lift his team to a win.

The Buckeyes have had a stellar season and the odds are certainly in their favor as they come into the final with an overall record of 13-1-3. The team’s only loss of the season came against UCLA, but since Michigan was able to beat the Bruins, a win against Ohio State is not out of the question.

The Buckeyes received a first round bye and opened tournament play against fourth-seeded Washington, winning 3-1 to earn a spot in the tournament final. The teams played a scoreless first half, but Parker Grinstead scored twice in one minute to give the Buckeyes a 2-0 lead. Siggi Magnusson made it 3-0 with a goal in the 71st minute of play. The Huskies’ lone goal was actually an own goal that ricocheted off a Buckeyes’ defender. Washington outshot Ohio State 14-8, but Max Trejo held strong in net to scoop up the two shots that made it on frame.

The last time Michigan and Ohio State met was during the 2023 season and the game resulted in a scoreless draw in Columbus. With tournament energy being a big factor in the finals, the Wolverines will look to garner it and pull off the biggest upset of the year to earn the tournament title.
