Vermont will look to earn its first national title in program history when the team takes on Marshall on Monday night.

The stage is set for the NCAA Division I National Championship and on Monday night, the 13th-seeded Marshall Thundering Herd will take on the unseeded Vermont Catamounts in Cary, North Carolina. Marshall returns to the title game for the first time since 2020 when the team won it all with a 1-0 win over Indiana. The Thundering Herd earned a spot in the championship after beating top-seeded Ohio State in a 1-0 upset on Friday night.

The lone goal of the match was scored early by Tarik Pannholzer with just his second goal of the season. Aleksa Janjic was credited with the assist after sending a long pass from goal to Pannholzer who was able to get in behind the defense for a breakaway opportunity which he buried to give his team the lead. The team settled in and defended for their lives as the Buckeyes produced 20 shots. Janjic was able to get his hands on each of the five shots on frame to earn the shutout, his 11th of the season.

The Catamounts have made a surprising run in this tournament and will hope to complete their Cinderella story on Monday night. The team has stormed through the tournament bracket, beating three teams seeded in the top 10. Vermont knocked off second-seeded Pitt in a 2-0 win last weekend before beating third-seeded Denver in the semifinals on Friday after a 1-1 draw ended up being decided by penalties.

The game was scoreless until the 68th minute when Denver went ahead, but Yaniv Bazini evened the score with seven minutes remaining in regulation with his 14th goal of the year. Nathan Simeon fed Bazini just outside the box and he was able to put it away. The Catamounts produced three shots in the golden goal overtime periods, but were unable to find the back of the net leading to penalty kicks. Bazini, Zach Barrett, Max Murray, and Maximilian Kissel each scored on their attempts while Niklas Herceg came up with one big save in net to punch a ticket to the College Cup final for the first time in program history.

Tune in Monday night on Fubo to see if Vermont can complete the Cinderella story with a national trophy at WakeMed Soccer Park.
