Three teams have the potential to play in the Big East championship with elimination games being a factor on Saturday.

The Big East Softball Tournament has been full of upsets and Friday night was no different as top-seeded St. John’s was eliminated by sixth-seeded Providence. The Red Storm opened tournament play against Creighton on Thursday and lost 5-3, teeing them up for a potential elimination on Friday. The Friars stepped up to the challenge, winning in a 10-0 run-rule victory to send the Red Storm home. Hanna Aldrich led the Friars with three RBI after hitting a three-run triple in the second inning, extending the team’s lead to 8-0. Alyssa Twomey picked up another win in the circle with five innings of work in which she struck out six batters and gave up six hits.

UConn and Creighton are also in the mix for the Big East championship on Saturday. The Blue Jays beat Butler and St. John’s to continue tournament play, setting themselves up for a game against second-seeded UConn on Friday night which resulted in a tough 12-1 loss. With the defeat, Creighton ended up in a consolation game against Providence which will take place earlier Saturday and determine who the Huskies will play in the 5:00 pm ET game.

The Huskies have been clean in tournament play so far, beating sixth-seeded Providence 5-4 on Thursday and fourth-seeded Creighton in a mercy on Friday. Grace Jenkins, Cat Petteys and Haley Coupal each finished the game with three RBI. Jenkins hit two homers while Petteys and Coupal each smashed one home run out of the park.

Whichever team wins the early game on Saturday afternoon, will take on the Huskies in the evening game. If UConn wins on Saturday night, the team will be crowned tournament champs, but if the Huskies lose, another game will be played on Sunday to determine the winner. Tune in Saturday night to see if the Huskies can go undefeated and earn the title.
