Four teams have the potential to play in the Big East championship with three games taking place on Friday night.

The sixth-seeded Providence Friars will take on the top-seeded St. John’s Red Storm on Friday night at Villanova Softball Complex in Philadelphia with the hopes of earning a spot in the Big East Tournament Championship on Saturday. The Friars earned a big 7-0 win over fifth-seeded Butler Thursday evening to stay alive in tournament play. The Red Storm took on fourth-seeded Creighton on Thursday and lost in a 5-3 defeat. Another loss for St. John’s will send the team home in an unexpected elimination.

Immediately following the game between St. John’s and Providence, a consolation game will take place between the loser of the UConn and Creighton game and the winner of the St. John’s and Providence game.

The winner of the UConn and Creighton matchup will advance to Saturday’s competition with the potential of playing any of the three remaining teams. St. John’s will need to win out in order to take home the conference tournament title.

This season, UConn won two of three games against Creighton and two of three games against Providence, but lost the series against St. John’s after winning the opener.

St. John’s swept Providence and won two of three games against both Creighton and UConn. The surprising loss to Creighton proves that tournament energy is unmatched and anything can happen.
