USC Upstate and Winthrop will look to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament with a win in the Big South final on Saturday.

The USC Upstate Spartans will take on the Winthrop Eagles on Saturday afternoon in the second meeting in two days as the teams play for the Big South Tournament title. The Eagles come into Saturday’s championship game with a record of 30-22 after beating Radford 1-0 on Friday night to earn a spot in Saturday’s final. The game was a tightly contested matchup with it being tied until the seventh inning. Lonna Addison stepped up to the plate in the top of the seventh and smashed a solo home run to center field. Not only did Addison hit the game-winning home run, she also won the game in the circle, throwing a complete game and striking out four batters while only giving up two runs and one walk.

The Spartans have been clean through Big South tournament play, beating second-seeded Longwood 12-3 in the opening game and fourth-seeded Winthrop on Friday in a 5-4 victory to advance to the championship. Five different Spartans scored in the win, led by Alanna Deal who went 2-for-4 at the plate. Deal was the only player with an extra-base hit with an RBI double in the fifth inning which extended the team’s lead to 4-3. Sophia Kardatzke followed with an RBI single and Abigail Pippen closed out the scoring with an RBI single, as well. Sierra Maness improved to 21-7 in the circle, pitching a complete game and striking out two batters, walking three batters and giving up just four hits in the win.

Saturday’s championship game is likely to be a battle between two strong teams. Winthrop and USC Upstate have now met four times this season and the Spartans hold a 3-1 lead after winning the teams’ Big South series 2-1 during regular season play.
