Texas Tech and Texas square off in a winner-take-all Game 3 at the Women’s College World Series on Friday night

Texas Tech (54-13) stayed alive in the Finals of the Women’s College World Series on Thursday night, setting up a decisive Game 3 set for Friday at Devon Park in Oklahoma City. The Red Raiders and Texas (55-12) traded one-run wins in the first two games as each looks for its first national championship. The Longhorns are in their second consecutive Finals and their third in the last four years, while Texas Tech, in its first WCWS, ended Oklahoma’s run of four straight championships to get to the Finals.

The Red Raiders held off a late rally on Thursday night in their 4-3 victory as Big 12 Pitcher of the Year Nijaree Canady got a game-ending strikeout with the tying run at third base. Texas Tech took a 2-0 lead in the fifth inning when Alana Johnson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded before Mihyia Davis scored on a wild pitch. Bailey Lindemuth added a sacrifice fly in the sixth and Victoria Valdez scored on an error in the same frame. Canady went the distance, allowing two earned runs while striking out six.

Texas did not start ace Teagan Kavan in the potential clincher, instead going with Mac Morgan. Morgan worked two scoreless innings before freshman Cambria Salmon took over and ran into trouble in the fifth. Mia Scott got the Longhorns on the board with a sixth-inning home run and Leighann Goode doubled home a run in the seventh before Katie Cimusz made it 4-3 with a sacrifice fly.

Canady (34-6) comes into Game 3 with a 0.97 ERA and 0.73 WHIP, striking out 317 in 239 innings this season. Kavan (27-5), who won Game 1, owns a 2.24 ERA and 1.08 WHIP in 200 innings with 227 strikeouts.

Canady also slashes .280/.418/.645 with a team-high 11 home runs for the 12th-seeded Red Raiders β€” who would become the lowest-seeded champion in WCWS history with a win β€” while Lauren Allred leads the team with 54 RBI and Davis has 27 steals in 32 attempts. Reece Atwood, who had the game-winning hit in Game 1, slashes .390/.504/.824 with 21 homers and 88 RBI while Kayden Henry is 33-of-35 in stolen-base attempts.
