Northwestern (13-9) opened its Big Ten slate with four wins at Oklahoma City last week and on Friday hosts No. 19 Mississippi State (25-5) in its home opener at Sharon A. Drysdale Field in Evanston, Illinois. The Bulldogs have won their last two games and are 5-1 in Southeastern Conference play, while the Wildcats come in with seven consecutive victories. Mississippi State was an NCAA tournament team last season, losing in the regionals, while Northwestern has played in six straight NCAA tournaments, reaching the super regionals in 2023 and the Women’s College World Series in 2022.

The Wildcats beat Penn State 13-7 on March 13 and took a 10-2 run-rule win in five innings on Saturday before taking a pair of games from Michigan State, 8-7 in eight innings on Saturday and 9-2 on Sunday. Bridget Donahey comes in slashing .265/.479/.612 with a team-high four home runs, while Kaylie Avvisato leads the team with 18 RBIs and 10 stolen bases in 10 attempts. Riley Grudzielanek is 6-5 in the circle with a 3.48 ERA and 1.66 WHIP in a team-high 48.1 innings.
The Bulldogs, after taking two of three at Alabama last weekend, got an 8-4 win at UAB on Wednesday, erupting for seven runs in the first inning and holding on from there. Sierra Sacco is off to a hot start at .500/.617/.875 with six home runs and a team-high 31 RBI to go with 13 steals in 16 attempts. Lexi Sosa leads the club with eight homers. Raelin Chaffin is 14-1 with a 1.32 ERA and 1.03 WHIP, striking out 111 in 90.1 innings.
Kate Drohan is 793-426-1 in her 24th season at Northwestern while Samantha Ricketts has a 184-105 mark in her sixth season coaching at Mississippi State. The three-game series continues with a doubleheader on Saturday and marks the first-ever meeting between the programs.
