A top 20 matchup will take place on Saturday as Mississippi State and Tennessee square-off in game two of their SEC series.

In the second of a three-game SEC series, No. 15 Mississippi State is in Knoxville taking on the No. 6 Tennessee Volunteers. In the first game of the series, Tennessee earned an 8-0 win in just five innings. The Lady Vols were able to jump out to a lead with a Kinsey Fiedler two-run homer in the first to score herself and Saviya Morgan. Later in the inning, Sophia Nugent singled, scoring Taylor Pannell to make it a 3-0 game. In the fifth inning, McKenna Gibson hit a solo shot to center field to extend the lead to 4-0. Emma Clarke followed with a two-run double scoring Laura Mealer and Katie Taylor to increase the team’s lead. Still in the fifth inning, Fielder hit a two-run single scoring Morgan and Gabby Leach to end the game. Karlyn Pickens improved to 14-4 on the season with the win after giving up four hits and striking out six batters.

With the loss on Friday night, Mississippi State dropped to 30-9 on the season and 6-4 in conference play for a spot in sixth place in the SEC standings. Raelin Chaffin took the loss in the circle after pitching 4.2 innings and allowing eight hits, seven runs, six of them earned, and striking out five batters. Sierra Sacco, Nadia Barbary, Kylee Edwards and Morgan Stiles each provided hits for the Bulldogs as they tried to bring runs home, but were unsuccessful as the Lady Vols’ defense stifled any chance at scoring.

Mississippi State and Tennessee have met a total of 70 times in their history and with the win on Friday, the Lady Vols hold a 48-22 lead in the all-time series. Tune in on Saturday afternoon to see if the Bulldogs can force a rubber match for game three with a win in Knoxville.
