Regional softball action continues on Saturday afternoon as Ohio State and Tennessee meet for the second game of the Knoxville Regional. The Buckeyes opened play against North Carolina on Friday, winning 9-6. UNC opened the scoring with a three-run double, but the Buckeyes battled back with home runs from Reagan Milliken and Taylor Cruse. A four-run fifth inning put Ohio State in front for good. Morgan Frye led the offensive efforts, going 1-for-3 at the plate with three RBI from a home run in the fifth. Lorin Boutte improved to 20-9 in the circle after pitching a complete game and striking out four batters. Strong defensive play allowed the team to back Boutte up as she gave up seven hits on the day.

The Volunteers got off to a dominant start on Friday, beating Miami (OH) 17-0 in a run-rule victory behind four home runs and two doubles. Karlyn Pickens got the start in the circle and went three innings, giving up two hits and striking out six batters before Sage Mardjetko came in to relieve her. Sophia Nugent and Laura Mealer led the offense, going 2-for-3 and 2-for-2, respectively, to each finish with four RBI on the day. The team posted a huge 11-run inning in the third to put the game out of reach for Miami, which is now facing elimination going into Saturday’s game against North Carolina.
Tennessee and Ohio State have met a total of five times in their history and the Lady Vols have won each of the five games. The teams met once last season and Tennessee earned a big 11-0 victory against the Buckeyes.
