No. 12 Alabama (4-1) goes from the desert to the humidity of Florida as it opens its stint at the Shriners Children’s Clearwater Invitational on Friday at the Eddie C. Moore Softball Complex in Clearwater, Florida. The Crimson Tide take on San Diego State (3-2) in the multi-team event, which began on Thursday. Alabama has played in the last two Women’s College World Series, while the Aztecs have a run of three consecutive NCAA tournament appearances, winning the Mountain West regular season and tournament crowns last season.

The Tide won four of five last weekend at the Candrea Classic in Tucson, Arizona, with its only loss coming to the host, then-No. 17 Arizona, on Saturday. Audrey Vandagriff was 7-for-12 at the event, with six runs scored and six RBIs, while Larissa Preuitt and Alexis Pupullo each finished with a home run and five RBIs. Catelyn Riley was 2-0 in three starts with a 2.63 ERA and 1.13 WHIP over 13.1 innings.

San Diego State scored four runs in the top of the fifth on Sunday and beat Army 9-1 at Funk Stadium in Riverside, California. Through five games, Jazmin Williams is 6-for-16 with six runs scored, while Cali Decker and Angie Yellen lead the squad with five RBIs each. Yellen is one of three Aztecs to have homered this season, along with Quinn Waiki and Shannon Cunningham. Grace Uribe worked in four of the games so far with a 1.70 ERA and 0.99 WHIP in 12.1 innings, with 12 strikeouts.

Patrick Murphy is 1,281-376 in his 27th season coaching at Alabama, a run that includes 25 straight NCAA tournaments, 15 WCWS appearances and a national championship in 2012. Stacey Neveman-Deniz, in her third season at San Diego State, has a 112-55 mark.
