An in-state rivalry game will take place on Friday night as Texas and Texas A&M battle for the final championship spot in SEC tournament play.

The top-ranked Texas A&M Aggies and the fifth-ranked Texas Longhorns will meet on Friday night as the teams look to claim the final spot in the SEC Tournament final to be played on Saturday at Jack Turner Softball Stadium in Athens, Georgia. The Longhorns received byes in the first and second round and opened tournament play against 11th-seeded Ole Miss on Thursday, winning in a narrow 7-6 victory. Teagan Kavan got the start in the circle for Texas and threw for four innings, striking out five batters, before Citlaly Gutierrez came in to relieve her. Gutierrez threw for three innings and picked up the win after striking out two and only giving up two hits. Leading the team offensively were Kayden Henry and Katie Stewart as they each brought in two runs.

The Aggies also opened tournament play in the quarterfinal round after receiving byes early on and played to a big 12-4 run-rule victory on Thursday night. Mya Perez had a dominant performance, finishing the game with five RBI from a two-run homer in the second, an RBI groundout in the fourth and a two-run single in the fifth. KK Dement also had a strong showing at the plate, hitting a three-run double in the fifth inning and bringing home a run in the fourth on a fielder’s choice. Emiley Kennedy pitched a complete game for Texas A&M, only giving up four hits on the day, walking four batters and striking out six to improve to 20-4 on the season.

The last time Texas and Texas A&M met took place during last year’s NCAA Austin Super Regional and Texas emerged victorious after coming back from one game down in the series. The Aggies won the first game 6-5 before the Longhorns battled to a 9-8 extra inning win in the second game and a narrow 6-5 victory in the rubber match.
