Syracuse will look to avoid a sweep by Virginia with a win on Sunday as the teams close out their ACC series in Charlottesville.

The Syracuse Orange will close out its ACC series with the Virginia Cavaliers on Sunday at Palmer Park as the team tries to avoid a sweep with a win. The Orange comes into Sunday’s game with an overall record of 22-18, but has struggled in conference play and is currently at the bottom of the standings with an ACC record of 3-14. The team has now lost three games in a row after getting shut out by the Cavaliers in game two on Saturday with a 10-0 loss in five innings. Julianna Verni took the loss in the circle after giving up eight earned runs in just 2.1 innings of work. Virginia was able to hold Syracuse to zero hits in the game, stifling any offense before it even began to burn.

With Saturday’s win, the Cavaliers improved to 29-13 overall on the season and 10-7 in ACC play which has them sitting in sixth place in the conference standings. The team came together fully on Saturday, playing both sides of the ball almost perfectly. Courtney Layne and Ava Hodges combined in the circle to throw a no-hitter with Layne striking out one batter and walking another. Sarah Coon led the team offensively, hitting a grand slam in the first inning to open the scoring and give the Cavaliers an early lead. Jade Hylton and Macee Eaton each brought two runs home, as well, with both women hitting two-run doubles in the third inning.
