Unbeaten Auburn takes on Virginia at the Shriners Children’s Clearwater Invitational on Friday morning

Auburn (6-0) won its only game on Thursday at the Shriners Children’s Clearwater Invitational and plays the first of two games on Friday with a morning clash against Virginia (4-2) at the Eddie C. Moore Softball Complex in Clearwater, Florida. The Cavaliers also won their lone game on Thursday and will play once on Friday. The Tigers have made 10 straight trips to the NCAA tournament while Virginia made just its second appearance in the NCAAs last season. Auburn went 5-0 at home last weekend during the Tiger Invitational while the Cavaliers were 3-2 at the Gamecock Invitational in Columbia, South Carolina.

Icess Tresvik and Anna Wohlers hit back-to-back RBI doubles in the bottom of the first to give the Tigers the lead and they never looked back in a 6-3 victory over Clemson on Thursday. Ma’Nia Womack added a three-run home run in the third and Chalea Clemmons improved to 3-0, allowing three runs over five innings. Tresvik is 11-for-20 on the season with three home runs and nine RBI while Nelia Peralta is off to a 12-for-22 start with three bombs and 10 RBI. SJ Geurin has worked 18 innings over four appearances with a 2.33 ERA and 1.00 WHIP to go with 14 strikeouts. She got the save on Thursday.

Virginia won its fourth straight game, taking down No. 23 Kentucky 4-1 on Thursday. The go-ahead run scored when Sarah Coon came home on a wild pitch in the fourth inning. She was 2-for-3 and scored twice while Savanah Henley worked three scoreless innings in relief to improve to 2-0. Coon is 7-for-17 while Macee Eaton leads the team with a homer and six RBI despite starting just 2-for-18. Courtney Layne is 2-0 in four appearances covering 12.2 innings, with a 2.21 ERA, 0.87 WHIP and 15 strikeouts.

Chris and Kate Malveaux are the co-head coaches at Auburn, named to the post last June after Mickey Dean resigned. Cavaliers coach Joanna Hardin is 177-219 in her ninth season at the helm.
