No. 24 Kentucky returns to Clearwater, Florida for another multi-team event on Thursday, opening with Wichita State in college softball.

Kentucky (4-1) jumped into the ESPN/USA Softball Top 25 this week after a solid showing at the NFCA Lead-Off Classic in Clearwater, Florida last weekend. The Wildcats are back in Clearwater for the Shriners Children’s Clearwater Invitational, opening play in the event on Thursday against Wichita State (5-0). Kentucky made its first NCAA tournament in 2009 and hasn’t missed since, with 15 straight appearances, but it hasn’t advanced beyond regional play since 2021.The Shockers had a run of three straight NCAA tourney bids ended last season.

The Wildcats opened with four straight wins before falling to then-No. 8 Duke in its final game last weekend. Peyton Plotts swung a hot bat, going 9-for-16 with five extra-base hits, including a home run, and 10 RBIs. Allie Blum was 9-for-15 with a home run. In the circle, Alexia Lacatena was 1-1 in two starts, with a 0.75 ERA and 0.77 WHIP in 9.1 innings.

Wichita State played at the GCU Kickoff Classic in Phoenix to open the season, winning all five of its games by a combined 37-7 score. Lauren Lucas finished the event 10-for-15 with two home runs and seven RBIs, with Catelyn Beckerley and Jodie Epperson also belting a pair of homers each. Clhloe Barber worked in three of the games, starting one, and allowed only one unearned run in 13.2 innings while striking out 18.

Rachel Larson has coached at Kentucky since 2008 and is 601-361-1 with a Women’s College World Series berth in 2014. Kristi Bredbenner came to Wichita State in 2012 and has a record of 369-264-1 with five NCAA tournament bids.
