Winthrop and South Carolina Upstate will meet in game one of their Big South series on Friday afternoon in college softball action.

The South Carolina Upstate Spartans will welcome the Winthrop Eagles to Cyrill Stadium on Friday to kick off a Big South series as the teams look to move up in the standings. The Spartans are currently in sixth place in the league table with an overall record of 27-9 and a Big South record of 2-4 so far. The team’s most recent games were played against Radford over the weekend and it suffered to losses to drop the series with the finale being a 3-1 defeat. Alanna Deal was responsible for the Spartans’ only run with an RBI double in the third inning, but that’s where the team’s scoring stopped. Sophia Kardatzke took the loss in the circle to drop to 4-3 on the season after throwing for seven innings and giving up three earned runs while striking out six batters.

The Eagles will look to Peyton Bryden to lead against the Spartans as she had led the team all season. Bryden leads the team with a batting average of .350. Tia Beckham has also been a big asset offensively as she has collected 29 RBI so far this season. The team is sitting in second place in the Big South standings with an overall record of 22-15 and a conference record of 5-3. The Eagles have lost three games in a row with the most recent being a close 3-2 loss to Wofford on Tuesday in 11 innings. . Megan Powell hit a solo shot in the first to give Wofford a 1-0 lead before Beckham added to it with an RBI double in the third. Wofford tied things up with a two-run double in the sixth before a walk-off single ended the game.

USC Upstate and Winthrop have met a total of 22 times and the Spartans hold a 13-9 lead in the all-time series. When the teams met last year in a Big South series, the Spartans took two of three to win the series.
