On Thursday evening, second-seeded Michigan will take on tenth-seeded Maryland in the quarterfinal round of play at the Big Ten Tournament in Iowa City. The Wolverines come into tournament play with an overall record of 38-16 and a conference record of 18-5. The team’s final series of the season was played against Ohio State and although Michigan picked up a 9-6 win in game one, the team fell in the next two games by scores of 6-0 and 2-1, respectively. The Wolverines are in search of their 11th Big Ten Tournament title and have a strong chance behind offensive powerhouses Maddie Erickson and Ellie Sieler. Lauren Derkowski and Hannah George will proved the precision and power in the circle as the team hopes for another title.

The Terps advanced to the quarterfinal round after defeating seventh-seeded Penn State on Wednesday in the first round of play with a 3-1 victory in nine innings. Diamond Williams opened the scoring for Maryland with a solo home run to center field in the fourth inning. The Nittany Lions tied things up in the fifth and the game remained tied until the ninth. In the top of the inning, Williams struck again with an RBI single before Madison Runyan followed with her own RBI single to score Bri Godfrey. Courtney Wyche pitched a complete game, striking out five batters on her way to the team’s fourth win in a row.
The last time these two teams met was during the 2022 Big Ten Tournament in East Lansing and Michigan won handily in a 7-0 victory. The winner of today’s game will go on to play either Rutgers or Wisconsin.
