On Thursday night, 11th-seeded South Carolina will take on third-seeded Texas A&M as the teams meet in the quarterfinal round of SEC Tournament play at Jane B. Moore Field. The Aggies bring a three-game losing streak into the SEC Tournament after being swept by No. 9 Florida in the final series of the regular season to bring the team to 15-9 in SEC competition and 39-12 overall. The team’s third-place finish in the SEC standings is the highest the team has finished since joining the league. The team enters the tournament in the top five in multiple categories including second most stolen bases with 69, runs with 331, batting average at .309 and on-base percentage at .412.

The Gamecocks opened up tournament play on Wednesday with a first round game against sixth-seeded Mississippi State in which they played to an 8-4 upset to advance to the quarterfinal round. Zoe Laneaux opened up the scoring with an RBI double in the first, followed by an RBI single from Aniyah Black to take a 2-0 lead. Laneaux extended that lead to 3-0 with an RBI single in the second and Jen Cummings was credited with an RBI after being hit by a bitch to bring home Denver Bryant. Mississippi State scored one run in the bottom of the second before South Carolina scored another four runs in the fifth to make it an 8-1 game. The Bulldogs countered with three runs in the bottom of the inning, but that was the closest they would come as the Garnet finished strong to move on in the tournament. Alana Vawter was credited with the win after giving up just five hits in five innings.
The last time South Carolina and Texas A&M met was during last year’s SEC tournament in which the Gamecocks earned a narrow 1-0 victory in eight innings to end the Aggies’ tournament run. The winner of this game will go on to play either Florida or Georgia in the semifinals.
