The Big Ten Championships in college wrestling heads to the semifinals with the best teams and individual wrestlers in the country.

The most talented conference in college wrestling features an all-day marathon of matches starting with the quarterfinals and ending here in the semifinals. This tournament begins with quarterfinal matchups, followed by consolation matches for the wrestlers that were not successful in their initial endeavor to become Big Ten Champions. Heading into the tournament the top seeds are the favorites to come away as champions. Upsets happen every year in a tournament giving the lower seeds the hope and drive heading into their matches in the Big Ten Championships. Every team in the Big Ten, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maryland, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern, Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue, Rutgers and Wisconsin, all have wrestlers in the tournament this year.

The Nittany Lions feature the most top-seeds in the tournament with five. All five have the opportunity to win their brackets. Last year’s champion in 165 lbs. Mitchell Mesenbrink is back as the top-seed in the weight class with the potential to go back-to-back in the Big Ten Championships.

Several other wrestlers from last season’s tournament are in the field this year. The Scarlet Knights Dylan Shawver (133 lbs.), the Buckeyes Jesse Mendez (141 lbs.), the Cornhuskers Ridge Lovett (149 lbs.) and the Nittany Lions Greg Kerkvliet (285 lbs.) are all back to defend their championship.

Also in the field is Gable Steveson, who has won 49 straight matches as one of the most decorated college wrestlers of all-time. He enters this tournament as the top-seeded wrestler in 285 lbs. and a favorite to win it all this year.
