In the opening round of the tournaments, several wrestlers made big names. Penn State came into the tournament as the No. 1-ranked team in the country, followed by Iowa, Oklahoma State, Northern Iowa, and Nebraska, rounding out the top five. Heading into the second rounds, all of those teams have a majority of wrestlers remaining.

In the 125-pound class, No. 2 Matt Ramos of Purdue — a 2023 NCAA finalist — takes the mat against No. 31 Richard. He gets the 11-3 major decision victory and is moving on. Braxon Brown gives Maryland their first win of the day in the 133-pound class and moves on. Penn State added another second round with Shayne Van Ness winning in the 149-pound weight class.

Keegan O’Toole from Missouri leads the odds for the 174-pound class and advanced to the second round as did another Penn State star Carter Starocci in the 184-pound class. The two highest classes are led by Cal State-Bakersfield’s AJ Ferrari and Minnesota’s Gable Steveson in the 195 and 285-pound weight classes.
