Last season’s U.S. Open Cup winner, Nashville SC, will get the ball rolling on its 2026 campaign with a road trip to Atlético Ottawa in the first round of the CONCACAF Champions Cup. The BJ Callaghan era entered a new phase after beating Austin FC to claim U.S. Open honors in October, resulting in the head coach being awarded a new deal until 2029 ahead of the new season. However, Atlético Ottawa is no stranger to trophies after getting its hands on the Canadian Premier League crown for the first time last year and will now aim to cause a major upset in its Champions Cup debut.

Fuelling Nashville’s attempt to claim another piece of silverware in 2026 will be a high-quality attacking unit consisting of last season’s top scorer, Sam Surridge, alongside Cristian Espinoza and Hany Mukhtar.

Former Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest striker Surridge finished last season as the joint-second-highest scorer in MLS (24 goals), finishing behind only Lionel Messi:

Atlético Ottawa is also entering a new dawn after clinching its maiden league title last term, with that success coming at a cost as a number of stars left for pastures new in January.

Among those departures was the club’s all-time top scorer, Samuel Salter, who has joined Swedish outfit GAIS on a four-year deal.

Replacing Salter will be Norwegian forward Erling Myklebust, while former Canada under-20 international Kamron Habibullah has joined from Swedish side Sandviken.

The 22-year-old barely made an impact in Sweden after breaking his leg soon after joining last year, though he’s shown promise after scoring 11 times in 26 outings for Sporting Kansas City’s reserves back in 2024.

The winner of this two-legged tie will advance to face Inter Miami in the last 16 of the competition, with the second leg set to take place back at Geodis Park next Tuesday.
