South Africa and Afghanistan square-off on Wednesday in their first-ever bilateral at Sharjah Cricket Stadium in the United Arab Emirates. It’s the first match of three between the sides. The teams have met in the ODI format before, in the Men’s Cricket World Cups in 2019 and 2023, with South Africa winning both. Their last meeting was in the Men’s T20 World Cup semifinals in San Fernando, Trindad and Tobago on June 26, with South Africa taking a third victory over the Afghans by nine wickets before losing to India in the final.

South Africa won’t have captain Temba Bavuma on Wednesday. He was ruled out with an illness and Aiden Markram will serve as the stand-in captain for the match.
