Australia can retain The Women’s Ashes trophy with a win in the first T20 match of the series on Monday in Sydney.

The multi-format Women’s Ashes series resumes on Monday with a T20 match between England and Australia in Sydney, with the Aussies in position to retain the two-nation trophy with a victory in the match. The format features three one-day international matches, three T20 matches and one Test match. Australia has held the Ashes since 2015 in a series that dates to 1934. The series included only Test matches until 2011, with the multiple-format change coming in 2013. The test match is worth four points in the series, or two each in case of a draw. The ODI and T20I matches award two points for a win, one for a tie and none for a loss.

Australia swept the three-match ODI series, winning by four wickets on Jan. 12, by 21 runs on Tuesday and by 86 runs on Friday. A win on Monday would give the Aussies eight points, guaranteeing no worse than a draw and retention of the Ashes.

England is emphasizing spin bowling for the T20I matches, adding Sarah Glenn to the lineup alongside Charlie Dean and Sophie Ecclestone for the three-match series. Meanwhile, Australia has some intrigue over whether there will be room on the roster for Alana King, who took nine wickets across the final two ODIs but hasn’t played in a T20I since the 2023 World Cup.

Australia hasn’t played a T20I since it was eliminated from the 2024 World Cup by South Africa in the semifinals. The Aussies have won 10 of the 25 Ashes series, with six going to England and nine ending in draws.
