For the 23rd time, the most iconic singing competition is back with American Idol. Last week the first of the auditions started for hopefuls looking to earn a golden ticket and spot on this season’s main cast. Ryan Seacrest returns as host as franchise icon. He is the only member of the original season back for season 23, which features three judges. Luke Bryan and Lionel Ritchie are back as judges this season. They are joined by season four winner Carrie Underwood who makes her debut as the third judge on the panel. She replaces Katy Perry who was a judge from season 16 on alongside Bryan and Ritchie who became constants after several seasons of rotating judges.

Season 23 saw virtual and in-person auditions starting on August 12th last year. Those auditions built a large group of potential cast members who were then able to audition live for the judges the next month.

Last season Abi Carter won American Idol to become the first female winner since season 16 where 20 year old Maddie Poppe won. Carter and Poppe are two of just seven female winners in American Idol history. They joined Underwood as female winners.

Since winning American Idol in season four (2005), Underwood has released nine albums, 22 number one hit singles and sold over 17 million records. She has traveled the world, toured for two full decades and is now coming back home to the place where it all began to help spark another aspiring artist’s career.
