The model American family is back on FOX on Sunday night, flexing its longevity with the premiere of Season 37 of The Simpsons.

It is a big Sunday night full of staple American programing, and there is no exception on FOX when The Simpsons returns for its Season 37 season premiere. America’s Funniest Home Videos and 60 Minutes is also airing new seasons tonight. While The Simpsons isn’t as old as the journalistic institution of 60 Minutes, it has been delivering us laughs for more seasons than AFV has, both premiering in 1989. It is also the longest running sitcom in the United States and the longest animated series in the history of American television. It continues to deliver on topical humor becoming about the only dysfunctional family that somehow you can rely on.

The great news is that Homer and family aren’t going anywhere any time soon. FOX has renewed the series for four more seasons through its 40th season. The show has won an Emmy for as many seasons as its been on the air, with 37. Many of those wins come from the Outstanding Animated Series, with 10 under its belt. The fact that The Simpsons is still on air brings a comfort that there is at least some kind of stability in this face changing culture.

The episode shows Marge exploring themes of nostalgia, as its difficult not to think about all the hours watching this classic program of the years. Marge is going through her old vintage clothing and her daughter Lisa is the benefactor from all this looking back.

Meanwhile, Homer is watching a thriller series. What could possibly go wrong? No matter when the last time it was that you watched this show, it feels like you can hop right back in no matter where you left off. Matt Selman is the show’s producer now and he will be responsible for steering the ship as the mainstay programs reaches its unprecedented 800th episode. What a ride.
