Journeyman Julien Guerrier storms to the lead in Andalucía with a 10-under 62 on Thursday

In Julien Guerrier’s 18 years on the DP World Tour, his best finish to date was a tie for second at the 2023 Porsche European Open. But on Thursday in the opening round of the Estralla Damm N.A. Andalucía Masters, Guerrier put himself in position to climb into the top 70 in the Race to Dubai Rankings and a spot in the DP World Tour Playoffs with a 10-under-par 62, demonishing the front nine with a seven-under 29. That puts him one shot ahead of Daniel Brown and two shots up on Jorge Campillo entering Friday’s second round at Real Club de Golf Sotogrande in Andalucía, Spain.

Defending champion Adrian Meronk is barred from playing the event after joining the LIV Golf tour this season. Guerrier opened his round with five straight birdies on holes 2-6, then put together four in a row on holes 8-11. Johannes Veerman is fourth at seven-under-par, with Romain Langasque and Niklas Norgaard tied for fifth at six-under.

Just two events remain on the tour’s regular-season schedule. Players are competing for the 835 Race to Dubai points awarded to the winner as well as the first-place share of $552,500 from the $3.25 million purse. A solo victory would vault Guerrier from 81st to 64th in the standings.

A group of five players stands in seventh place at five-under-par, including Rasmus Højgaard, Tom McKibbin, Fabrizio Zanotti, Richard Mansell and Jordan Smith.
