Alfredo Garcia-Heredia and Alex Fitzpatrick enter Friday’s second round in Switzerland with a share of the Omega European Masters lead.
Spanish veteran Alfredo Garcia-Heredia fired a seven-under-par 63 on Thursday in the first round of the Omega European Masters to set the lead. Later in the day, England’s Alex Fitzpatrick matched that score, leaving the pair with a share of the lead entering Friday’s second round at Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club in Crans Montana, Switzerland. Neither has a win on the DP World Tour, where the 42-year-old Garcia-Heredia has competed since 2005. Fitzpatrick, the younger brother of 2022 U.S. Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick, turned pro in 2022. The 25-year-old comes in off sixth and 12th place finishes in his last two events.

Garcia-Heredia played the final six holes at six-under-par, starting with a birdie on No. 13 and adding an eagle at the par five 14th. Fitzpatrick rolled in seven birdies on the day. Matt Wallace, Daan Huizing, Jason Scrivener and Henrick Norlander each carded 64s on Thursday to share third place, while seven players, including 22-year-old Swiss amateur Nicola Gerhardsen, are at five-under-par.
Defending champion Ludvig Åberg was set to undergo surgery this week to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee after finishing 16th at the Tour Championship in Atlanta last weekend. Matt Fitzpatrick is looking for his third title at Crans Montana after his wins in 2017-18 and put up a first-round 66.
Thriston Lawrence, the 2022 winner, posted a two-under 68. Garcia-Heredia and Fitzpatrick were among the players who started later in the day and took advantage of calmer conditions after the morning starters dealt with strong winds.
