Serbia plays its first match of its UEFA Group K World Cup qualifying schedule when it visits Albania on Saturday

Serbia, one of five teams in Group K in UEFA’s qualifying tournament for the FIFA World Cup 2026, sees its first action on Saturday when it visits Albania (1-1-0) at Air Albania Stadium in Tirana. England got off to a quick start in group play with a pair of clean-sheet victories in the first leg of the competition in March while Albania split its two matches in that window. Latvia also split while Andorra lost twice. Serbia is looking to qualify for its third straight World Cup after dropping out in the group stage in both 2018 and 2022. Albania has never reached the World Cup.

Albania, ranked No. 66 in the latest FIFA rankings, got a brace from Rey Manaj (Sivasspor, Turkey) while Mytro Uzuni (Austin FC, MLS) added a late goal in stoppage time in its 3-0 win over Andorra in Tirana on March 24. Thomas Strakosha (AEK Athens, Greece) picked up the clean sheet in the victory. Defender Berat Gjimshiti serves as Albania’s captain and plays for Atalanta in Italy’s Serie A.

Forward Aleksandar Mitrović (Al-Hilal, Saudi Arabia) will serve as the Serbian captain during qualifying and has 98 caps and 59 goals in international play. Serbia has a great deal of international experience in the midfield, with Nemanja Gudelj (Sevilla, Spain) playing 68 caps, Nemanja Maksimović (Panathinaikos, Greece) 55 and Saša Lukić (Fulham, English Premier League) and Andrija Živković (PAOK, Greece) holding 54 each.

The neighboring nations have met just twice in international play and Saturday’s matchup is the first in nearly 10 years. Serbia took a 2-0 win on Oct. 8, 2015, in the UEFA European Championship after Albania took the first meeting between the sides 3-0 on Oct. 14, 2014, also during the European Championship.
