Romania battles Austria on Saturday in Group H play of the FIFA World Cup 2026 Qualifying

Romania looks to take a step towards moving on to the next stage of qualifying when it takes on Austria on Saturday. Romania come into Saturday with one win and one loss in its first two matches. It currently sits in a second place tie with Cyprus in Group H. Both countries have three points and are three points back of Bosnia-Herzegovina. Romania fell to Bosnia-Herzegovina in its first match 1-0, but bounced back in a big way as it beat San Marino 5-1 to get its first win. Romania got on the board six minutes in thanks to an own goal. Mihai Popescu made it a two-goal lead right before halftime. Razvan Marin and Ianis Hagi both scored on penalties in the second half and Denis Alibec finished off the scoring in extra time. Romania is hoping it can get the same type of offensive output on Saturday against Austria. Romania will move on to the next stage with wins in its last two match. It will play Cyprus on Tuesday in its last match.

Romania will be playing its first group match on Saturday and is looking to get a good start as it tries to catch the top teams in the standings.

Austria will hit the pitch again on Tuesday for its second match. It will head to San Marino to play them.

Austria will then not get back on the pitch until September, when it will play Cyprus and then two days later it will play Bosnia-Herzegovina in its last group match.

The top two teams in the group will move on to the next stage of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in the USA.
