France hopes to leapfrog Iceland in World Cup qualifying on Tuesday as the top two teams in Group D collide

Both France and Iceland were victorious in the opening games of their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaigns and will face off on Tuesday each hoping to cement their places at the top of the pool. But Iceland will have to make history if it hopes to open up a lead at the head of Group D, having never managed to record a win over France in 15 meetings to date, losing the last two clashes between these teams. The Scandinavian representatives have been particularly unfortunate when playing France away from home, though it was only back in 2018 that they managed a 2-2 draw in Guingamp.

It would take a Herculean effort to replicate that result at the Parc des Princes this week, even if Arnar Gunnlaugsson’s side are coming off the back of a very impressive 5-0 win over Azerbaijan.

Isak Johannesson was at the double in Reykjavik and contributed two goals in the space of five minutes to move his side to the top of Group D and mark a perfect start to the pool phase.

France got off to the perfect start in qualifying after a 2-0 win over Ukraine in Wroclaw gave Deschamps’ men three points at the first time of asking.

Michael Olise opened the scoring for the visitors before Aurelien Tchouameni set Real Madrid team-mate Kylian Mbappe up for a late second with an outrageous long ball out from the back:

Iceland may have managed a friendly draw against France seven years ago but has in fact lost its last four competitive clashes against Les Bleus.

A mighty task awaits Gunnlaugsson & Co in Paris on Tuesday evening, with this result likely to play a decisive hand in whether or not Iceland will reach its second World Cup next year.
