Group L play begins on Saturday as Montenegro and Gibraltar go head-to-head in World Cup qualifying action.

World Cup qualifiers begin on Saturday for Montenegro and Gibraltar as the teams meet in the first game of Group L play at City Stadium in Montenegro. The teams will play 10 matches in group play to determine whether or not they will move on in qualifications. A home and away match against each of the four other teams in the group will take place over the next eight months. Joining Montenegro and Gibraltar in Group L are Czechia and the Faroe Islands. Either France or Croatia will join them depending on which team loses the two-leg UEFA Nations League competition between them. The United States, Mexico and Canada have already qualified as they are hosting the 2026 event together.

Montenegro’s most recent game was played back in UEFA Nations League play in November against Turkey and resulted in a 3-1 victory, the only match the team won during group play. Nikola Krstović took matters into his own hands, scoring all three goals at the 29 minute mark, 45 minute mark and 73 minute mark to earn the win.

Gibraltar last took to the pitch in November in an international friendly against Moldova and resulted in a 1-1 draw. Moldova struck first with a goal in the 40th minute, but Liam Walker converted a penalty kick in the 68th minute to tie the game up.

Montenegro and Gibraltar have met twice in their history, both games taking place in 2021 for UEFA World Championship qualifiers. Montenegro advanced after winning 4-1 in the first leg and 3-0 in the second.
