Four-time world champion Italy finally gets its 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign underway with a trip to Norway on Thursday.

Italy will look to claw Norway down to size on Thursday and is looking to end a run of three games without a win when it takes on the current Group I leader in 2026 World Cup qualifying. The Azzurri have been delayed in getting their campaign off the ground after advancing to the last eight of the UEFA Nations League finals, while Norway has been hard at work paving a path to next year’s tournament. And the striker duo of Erling Haaland and Alexander Sorloth have been particularly busy so far this year, converting two goals apiece in two games for the top scorers in UEFA qualification to date.

Manchester City marvel Haaland and Atletico Madrid frontman Sorloth have proved a potent brew leading Norway’s attack, while Arsenal playmaker Martin Odegaard has also chipped in with three assists.

But Stale Solbakken’s side have had the advantage of an early start and could be pulled within three points of Luciano Spalletti’s counterparts should they lose at the Ullevaal Stadion in Oslo.

Italy’s UEFA Nations League dream came to an end in March after a two-legged quarter-final fixtures against Germany ended in a 5-4 defeat on aggregate.

That was despite a valiant comeback attempt in the away leg, where the Azzurri fought from three goals down to draw 3-3, with Fiorentina forward Moise Kean snagging two of their goals:

This will be the first time these two countries have clashed in almost a decade, and it’s fair to say Norway has evolved a lot since its days as Italy’s whipping boys.

The Lions haven’t managed to qualify for a World Cup since 1998, but there’s a confidence building to suggest they could be capable of an upset to take top spot in Group I.

Italy will be without defender Francesco Acerbi, who recently finished as a Champions League runner-up with Inter Milan, after citing a lack of respect from manager Spalletti.

Lorenzo Pellegrini, Manuel Locatelli, Jorginho and Federico Chiesa are also among the key men missing amid what appears to be a rocky period for the Italians.

Regional restrictions may apply.
