Liam Everts of Husqvarna arrives in Sardegna, Italy, with a 3-point lead over KTM’s Simon Längenfelder in the MX2 standings

Belgian rider Liam Everts has just one win in six races in the MX2 division of the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (International Motorcycling Federation) World Championship, but through three rounds of the schedule, the Husqvarna racer holds a three-point lead over German Simon Längenfelder of KTM, who picked up his first race win two weeks ago at the MCGP of Europe in Saint-Jean-d’Angély, France. On Sunday, the action shifts to Sardegna, Italy, for the fourth round of the 20-event championship season. Defending MX2 world champion Kay de Wolf won at Sardegna last year en route to his first title.

de Wolf won the initial round in Córdoba, Argentina, on March 2 before Everts claimed Round 2 in Cózar, Spain. Andrea Adamo, the 2023 world champion, won in France on March 23. Six different riders have won the six races through three events this season.

While Everts and Längenfelder top the standings table, de Wolf is only five points out of first place, with Adamo fourth, 11 points behind. Thibault Benistant is fifth, 24 points back, and Sasha Coenen is 34 points behind. Riders earn 25 points for a race win, 22 for second and 20 for third, down to a single point for a 20th-place finish. Everts, Längenfelder, de Wolf and Adamo each have three podium finishes this season.

The FIM World Championship has been contested since 1957 and has evolved from awarding titles for the 500cc class only to adding a 250cc category in 1962 and a 125cc classification in 1975. In 2005, the classes were changed to MotocrossGP, 125cc and 650cc and changed to MX1, MX2 and MX3 in 2004. The MX3 class was dropped after the 2013 season.
